A Shift in Sony's PC Strategy
While fans have grown accustomed to seeing major PlayStation hits migrate to computer platforms, the latest installment in the God of War series may remain a console exclusive for the foreseeable future. Sony recently unveiled God of War Laufey during its latest State of Play broadcast, featuring Kratos’ late wife, Faye, as the protagonist.
The Journey into the Everywhen
According to Santa Monica Studio, the game follows Faye as she navigates the afterlife to protect those closest to her. The developers describe the setting as follows:
«To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods—the Everywhen—where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.»
Consoles as a Strategic Priority
In recent years, titles such as God of War (2018), Ragnarok, and the Valhalla expansion made the jump to PC, marking a significant shift for Sony. However, recent reports suggest the company is retreating from day-and-date PC releases for its major single-player narratives. Industry analysts believe this move is designed to bolster PlayStation 5 sales by reinstating the value of exclusive blockbuster experiences.
Multiplayer vs. Single-Player Exclusivity
While Sony intends to maintain a presence on PC with multiplayer titles—capitalizing on the massive success of Helldivers 2—flagship single-player franchises like God of War Laufey appear to be off-limits for the time being. This mirrors the current industry trend seen with major releases like Grand Theft Auto 6, which is also skipping a simultaneous PC launch.
While an official release date for God of War Laufey has not been confirmed, it is expected to launch exclusively for PlayStation 5. It is likely that Sony will schedule the game's release to avoid direct competition with other major titles hitting the market later this year.
