A New Chapter in Narrative Horror
During the latest 40-minute State of Play presentation, Sony delivered several significant announcements, with the reveal of Until Dawn 2 standing out as the highlight. This upcoming title is positioned as a fresh narrative horror experience, serving more as a spiritual successor than a traditional direct continuation of the first game.
Change in Development Leadership
A notable shift for the franchise is that Supermassive Games, the creator of the original title, is not leading the development of this sequel. Instead, the project is being managed by PlayStation first-party studio Firesprite Games. Firesprite is recognized for their work on The Persistence and the VR title Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Meanwhile, Supermassive Games continues its own path with their The Dark Pictures series, recently launching Directive 8020.
Premise and Gameplay Mechanics
Until Dawn 2 shifts the focus to a group of amateur ghost hunters seeking viral fame on an isolated, abandoned island. As expected, their expedition takes a sinister turn. The gameplay will maintain the signature focus on player agency, where individual decisions can determine the survival or demise of key characters while the narrative persists. The official premise is described as follows:
“Ready to die for likes? Join a team of ambitious ghost hunters as they chase their next viral hit on a remote island haunted by a woman’s chilling story of something far darker than they bargained for. When the tale begins to manifest in terrifying ways, survival will take more than a strong signal to get off the island alive. Their lives are in your hands. Make every choice count.”
Cast and Release Expectations
While the full roster of characters remains under wraps, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a familiar face: the character model clearly reflects actor Neil Newbon, known for his iconic performance as Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Until Dawn 2 is currently in active production and is slated for a 2027 release on the PlayStation 5.
