A New Hybrid for Astrophotography
Identifying celestial bodies in the night sky usually requires external tools or extensive research. However, the upcoming ArcBlue C24 aims to bridge the gap between high-end mirrorless performance and the user-friendly guidance of smart telescopes. This unique system integrates a full-frame 24MP Sony sensor with an active star-tracking mechanism to not only capture the stars but also automatically identify and track them.
Innovative Magnetic Design and Setup
One of the most distinct features of the C24 is its detachable magnetic screen. This design choice allows photographers to monitor exposure data and frame their shots without physically disturbing the camera during long-exposure sequences. Furthermore, the screen functions as a wireless remote, eliminating the need to tie up a smartphone with specialized control apps.
The system is designed to streamline the notoriously complicated world of deep-sky photography. According to the manufacturer, a standard professional astrophotography rig often requires at least eight separate components and a web of cables. The ArcBlue C24 achieves the same results with just four devices and two cables, primarily by utilizing the Pulsar Tri-Axis Harmonic Equatorial Mount to negate the Earth's rotation.
High-Performance Imaging and HDR
Beyond its clever tracking abilities, the camera is a powerhouse for challenging lighting conditions. The internal software features in-camera HDR stacking, which significantly expands the sensor's capabilities:
- Dynamic Range: Boosts performance from 14 EV to an impressive 29 EV.
- Sensor Cooling: Prevents digital noise during long exposures of up to ten minutes.
- Origins: The project was inspired by the extreme lighting contrast of a solar eclipse, with initial prototypes dating back to 2015.
Flexibility and Compatibility
The ArcBlue C24 features an interchangeable faceplate system, ensuring versatility for different optics. It provides native support for Sony E, Canon EF, and Nikon Z mounts, as well as M68 telescope threads. Users can also utilize third-party adapters to attach a wide array of other lenses. This flexibility allows the system to transition from wide-angle landscape astrophotography to detailed, magnified shots of distant nebulae or planets. While the full equatorial mount is ideal for deep-space work, the system remains modular, allowing users to strip it down for a more portable nightscape setup.
Following its initial showcase at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) event, the company has recently indicated that the C24 is nearing a commercial launch via a Kickstarter campaign.
