OpenAI's Formal Response to Litigation

Following a lawsuit filed by Apple in July, which accused the startup of misappropriating trade secrets via former Apple staff, OpenAI has officially broken its silence. In a recent blog post titled "Apple is getting this wrong," the AI developer addressed the accusations directly.

The company stated: "Apple is one of the greatest companies of all time, and built a reputation for obsessing over the smallest details. This careless, aggressive and oddly personal lawsuit sadly doesn't live up to that reputation." Furthermore, OpenAI emphasized: "Apple's request for a preliminary injunction is both based on false information and completely unnecessary because we do not have, nor want, any of their trade secrets."


The Defendants and the Nature of the Dispute

The legal action targets several key figures and entities, including:

  • Chang Liu, formerly a senior electrical engineer at Apple.
  • Tang Tan, Apple's former vice president of product design for the iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch.
  • OpenAI itself and the startup io Products.

Notably, io Products—which OpenAI acquired last year—was co-founded by Tan alongside legendary former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive and other high-profile industry veterans.


The Stakes for Future Hardware

Apple has sought a preliminary injunction to prevent the defendants from accessing or utilizing the trade secrets in question, arguing that the company faces "irreparable harm" without such intervention. While OpenAI contends the claims are built on misunderstandings, a court ruling in favor of Apple could significantly hinder the startup’s ambitions in the consumer hardware space.

Although OpenAI is best known for ChatGPT, industry reports suggest the company is actively developing AI-integrated hardware, including a portable smart speaker equipped with sensors and cameras. While this product is not a direct rival to the iPhone, some analysts view OpenAI's move into hardware as a long-term challenge to Apple’s dominance in the electronics market—particularly as Apple continues to navigate its own AI development efforts.
