A New Chapter for Racing Enthusiasts

Maverick Games, a studio established in 2024 by industry veterans from Playground Games with deep roots in the Forza Horizon franchise, has officially unveiled its inaugural project: Clutch. This narrative-driven, open-world racing experience aims to blend high-stakes competition with personal storytelling.

The World of R1K and Underground Racing

The game centers on the journey of siblings competing in the R1K racing series. While the professional circuit provides sanctioned events, it serves as a facade for the "Midnight Collective," an underground organization that exposes the darker, grittier side of the game’s campaign. Players will navigate these two worlds, experiencing a dynamic narrative environment where power dynamics between rival crews shift based on PvPvE interactions.

According to the developers, the campaign features a living world where races can happen spontaneously. As the team noted:

"You’ll be able to react to these shifts within the context of your own campaign, partaking in a mix of planned and spontaneous races that can pop up at anytime."
More details regarding these mechanics are expected to be revealed during a trailer debut at Summer Game Fest.

Physics and Customization

Maverick Games is focusing on a unique arcade-style racing experience powered by a custom physics engine. The studio aims to utilize its open-world sandbox design to foster chaotic and engaging races. A key pillar of the gameplay is vehicle personalization; the developers have emphasized that players will have extensive options to modify their cars, fostering a deeper personal connection to their chosen vehicles.

Development and Release Outlook

Although the project faced a hurdle when Amazon exited its publishing agreement earlier this year, Maverick Games founder and creative director Mike Brown confirmed that the studio is actively pursuing new partnerships. Despite the shift in publishing plans, development remains on schedule for a projected release in spring 2027.
