A New Frontier in the Forgotten Realms

While Baldur's Gate 3 remains a standout RPG, some players have felt that the second act could benefit from additional environmental variety. For those seeking an alternative to the gloom of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, a dedicated modder named SquallyDaBeanz has unveiled a massive solution: Baldur's Gate 3: Act Two Expansion. This project, which spent nearly two years in active development, introduces a brand-new, expansive region known as The Chionthar Wilds.

What to Expect in The Chionthar Wilds

The mod creators describe the new region as being comparable in scale to the wilderness found in the game's first act. Players can access this content either by progressing naturally after completing the Shadow-Cursed Lands sequence—ideally at level 8 or higher—or by utilizing a quickstart feature that grants immediate access, complete with pre-configured equipment and hirelings.

The expansion adds a significant amount of content to the base game, including:

  • Over 30 unique combat encounters featuring new creature types.
  • A collection of more than 70 original items.
  • Fresh NPCs, narrative quests, and cinematic cutscenes.

To ensure the game remains balanced, experience points within the custom zone have been adjusted, preventing players from becoming overpowered before they reach the climactic third act.

Classic CRPG Experience

As this is a community-driven project, it operates differently from official Larian Studios content. The mod does not feature voice acting, and it lacks certain complex interactions found in the main game, such as the ability to speak with animals or the dead. Furthermore, decisions made within the expansion do not impact the events of the third act, offering a self-contained, old-school CRPG experience that rewards careful reading and strategic gameplay.
