Advancements in Wireless Video Transmission

While DJI is globally recognized for its market-leading drones, a core component of its dominance lies in its proprietary video transmission technology. The company has officially expanded its professional cinematography lineup with the launch of the SDR Transmission II. This latest iteration significantly enhances both visual fidelity and operational range, providing production teams with more flexibility in complex environments.


Technical Specifications and Performance

The original SDR Transmission hardware was capped at 1080p resolution with a 20Mbps bitrate and a 3km range. The new system, based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, marks a major jump in capability:

  • Video Quality: Supports 4K 60fps HDR at 50Mbps.
  • Transmission Range: Extends up to 2.5 miles (4km).
  • Latency: As low as 35 milliseconds, ensuring real-time responsiveness.

According to DJI, the system is designed to maintain a stable link in demanding locations, ranging from open-air stadiums to dense forest terrains, and is well-suited for high-speed car-to-car shooting or FPV drone tasks.


Multi-Camera Production Capabilities

The SDR Transmission II is built for scale. A single transmitter can pair with up to eight receivers, all of which support remote camera control. This allows directors, producers, and focus pullers to monitor footage and adjust settings simultaneously. For massive productions, the ecosystem supports up to five transmitters and 40 receivers in a single network.

Professional Features and Control

The device simplifies production workflows by allowing users to toggle between different camera feeds instantly, eliminating the need for time-consuming reboots or re-pairing. Key features include:

  • Smartphone monitoring compatibility.
  • Integrated assist tools such as LUTs, focus peaking, and waveforms.
  • PTP control support for adjusting ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and capture status on supported cameras.

Pricing and Availability

While the underlying wireless architecture shares similarities with the OcuSync technology found in DJI’s drone fleet, this iteration is specifically fine-tuned for pro-cinema workflows. The SDR Transmission 2 transceivers are currently priced at €349 (£309), with a two-pack combo available for €629 (£559). Currently, the product has not been announced for the US market.
