A New Chapter for Arcade Racing

For many racing enthusiasts, the pinnacle of the arcade genre remains the Burnout franchise. Created by Criterion Games, the series left an indelible mark on gaming history before effectively disappearing from the spotlight. Now, a new development studio, When Tides Turn, is looking to channel that legacy with their upcoming title, Wreckreation 2, aiming to get back to the core fundamentals that made the original games so legendary.

Leadership and Evolution

The studio is helmed by Fiona Sperry, a veteran who contributed to every entry in the Burnout series and worked on the 2010 Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit reboot. While the original Wreckreation, released in 2025, received a lukewarm reception due to technical issues and a heavy reliance on user-generated content, the sequel is charting a different path. According to insights provided to the media, the development team is prioritizing refined vehicle handling and high-impact collision physics.

Refining the Driving Experience

  • Dynamic Drifting: Unlike the scripted drifting of the previous title, the sequel aims to offer more freedom, allowing for more intuitive control in complex city environments.
  • Impact Physics: Developers are working on new camera techniques and visual effects to ensure that every crash feels heavy and impactful, echoing the signature slow-motion destruction of Burnout.
  • Expanded Environments: Recognizing that the first game’s world felt somewhat empty, the team is designing more diverse areas, including dockyards, highways, and airport districts, to add verticality and variety.

«The goal is to move beyond simple visuals and deliver that visceral, moment-to-moment action that defined the arcade racing genre at its peak.»

Looking Ahead

Although the project is still in a very early pre-alpha state, the vision is clear. The final release is expected to feature over 30 unique, highly customizable fictional vehicles. Additionally, the team has promised the return of fan-favorite modes such as Road Rage and Marked Man, alongside significant improvements to the opponent AI.

While an official launch date has not been set, the game is already available for wishlisting on Steam. In an industry increasingly focused on monetization, the effort to bring back the pure, arcade-focused adrenaline of the past is a welcome ambition for long-time racing fans.
