A Fresh Start for a Troubled Franchise

Digital adaptations of the beloved tabletop game Blood Bowl have long been a source of frustration for fans. From the low-quality early attempts in the 90s to the recent Blood Bowl 3—which was widely criticized for its aggressive live-service model and complex microtransactions—the history of the series has been tumultuous. However, a major change is on the horizon as Slitherine steps in to take over publishing duties from Nacon.

The Vision for a Definitive Experience

With Slitherine now at the helm, there is renewed optimism that the next iteration, titled Warhammer Blood Bowl, will restore the franchise's reputation. Marco Alessandro Minoli, the Director of Publishing at Slitherine, emphasized the company's commitment to quality:

«Our goal with Warhammer Blood Bowl is simple: we want this to become the definitive Blood Bowl videogame—not just at launch, but for years to come. Our vision is to support and expand it over time, turning it into a living, constantly evolving experience, just as we've successfully done with other Warhammer titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector and Warhammer 40,000: Gladius.»

Updates and New Features

Rather than functioning as a completely standalone title, Warhammer Blood Bowl acts as a comprehensive update to Blood Bowl 3. The goal is to align the digital experience with the current “third season” edition of the physical tabletop game. Key additions include:

  • New Teams: The inclusion of the Tomb Kings and the Bretonnians.
  • Rumble Mode: A faster-paced gameplay variant featuring seven-player teams, with a playable demo expected late this summer.

What This Means for Existing Players

For those who already own Blood Bowl 3, the transition will be seamless: Warhammer Blood Bowl will be provided as a free update. Additionally, all previously purchased teams and cosmetic items will carry over to the new version. While this indicates that the purchase-based team model will likely persist, the community remains hopeful that Slitherine's track record with the Warhammer license will lead to a more polished and sustainable experience when the game officially launches this fall.
