A Daunting Legacy

Following the massive critical and commercial achievements of Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3, the developer decided to shift its focus toward a new Divinity project rather than pursuing a sequel. While a fourth entry in the franchise would seem like a guaranteed success, the question of who might helm such a massive undertaking remains unanswered. It has recently emerged that Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast approached Archetype Entertainment to take on the project, only to be met with a firm refusal.

The Challenge of Competition

Archetype Entertainment is led by industry veterans James Ohlen and Kevin Martens, both of whom previously served as co-lead designers on the classic Baldur's Gate 2. Hasbro CEO Chris Cox reached out to Ohlen personally after discovering that Larian would not be returning for another sequel.

Reflecting on that conversation, Ohlen stated: «I don't, I would fail, and here's why I would fail.» He noted that attempting to follow in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3 would be an overwhelming task. «Having to compete against Baldur's Gate 3? That would be insanity,» he added, noting that his studio is already heavily committed to their own upcoming title, Exodus.

The Technical Barrier

A significant portion of the success of Baldur's Gate 3 stemmed from the fact that it was crafted on Larian's proprietary engine. Ohlen pointed out that building a new engine for a potential sequel would be a daunting process, describing it as «at least half a decade of horror.»

Although Ohlen inquired whether Larian might be willing to license their engine, he remained skeptical about the potential outcome. He expressed that even with access to the same technology, a new game would likely lack the unique creative touch that Larian provided. As Ohlen noted:

«Swen Vincke is always going to be the master of building those kinds of things. It's really hard to take him off that throne, just because of everything—the tools, institutional knowledge, team.»

With Baldur's Gate 3 surpassing 20 million copies sold and securing numerous Game of the Year accolades, the bar for the franchise has been set exceptionally high. Consequently, Larian Studios has acknowledged that they now face increased pressure to ensure their upcoming work on the Divinity series meets the high expectations set by their previous triumph.
