The Promise of Automation

Waiting in virtual queues for tickets or travel bookings is a common frustration for many users. Whether it’s securing a spot for a major event or booking a holiday, the process is often tedious and prone to human error, such as missing a brief window of opportunity due to a simple distraction. The introduction of the 'Notify Me' feature in iOS 27 initially seemed like the perfect solution, promising to monitor webpages and provide alerts whenever changes occur.

How Notify Me Functions

Integrated directly into the Safari browser, Notify Me acts as an AI-powered assistant that tracks specific webpage updates. Accessible from the menu bar near the URL field, it is designed for ease of use. The core functionality allows users to:

  • Monitor general page updates.
  • Track specific changes based on custom written prompts.
  • Schedule checks on an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

The Gap Between Long-Term and Real-Time

Currently, the tool excels at long-term tracking. It is highly effective for tasks like waiting for product restocks or monitoring price drops, where checking a page once an hour or once a day is sufficient. However, the current iteration falls short for time-sensitive scenarios.

«In the short term, the scope of Notify Me is too limited. If you are dealing with a virtual queue that provides a narrow 10 to 20-minute window to complete a transaction, an hourly check is simply insufficient. By the time the AI alerts you, your opportunity will likely have expired.»

Future Potential and Hardware Constraints

To become a truly versatile utility, Apple needs to bridge the gap toward near real-time monitoring. Reducing the refresh interval to 5 or 10 minutes would drastically improve its utility for consumers. Of course, such upgrades come with technical challenges. AI processes are resource-intensive, and increasing the frequency of page checks could place significant strain on device hardware and battery life.

Despite these limitations, Notify Me remains an impressive step forward in browser-based AI integration. If Apple can optimize the resource management, future updates could transform this feature from a niche, long-term tool into an essential daily companion for navigating the digital landscape.
