A San Francisco startup, Rune, has unveiled a groundbreaking solution called RELIC, a modular computing unit designed to harness idle solar energy. By connecting directly to existing solar power plants, the system bypasses the need for traditional electrical grid connections or time-consuming data center construction.
This announcement coincides with a successful $40 million Series A funding round for Rune, bringing the company's total capital raised to $53.5 million.
Solving Energy Waste in Renewable Projects
Solar energy facilities frequently experience significant energy wastage, with estimates suggesting that up to 20% of generated electricity—amounting to over 50 TWh annually in the U.S.—goes unused. RELIC captures this idle current at the source, effectively avoiding the utility fees, metering costs, and grid infrastructure bottlenecks that currently hinder the expansion of artificial intelligence projects.
«Every solar plant is a latent data center. The power is already there, sitting idle while AI labs wait years for grid connections that may never come,» stated William Layden, Co-Founder and CEO of Rune.
Rapid Deployment and Efficiency
Rune highlights several key advantages of the RELIC system compared to traditional data center models:
- Speed: Systems can be installed in roughly 60 minutes, with full GPU capacity operational within six weeks of contract execution.
- Cost-Effectiveness: The infrastructure reduces non-compute spending by 85%, potentially saving nearly $620 million for a 100 MW deployment.
- Technical Efficiency: RELIC runs on direct current (DC), the native output of solar panels. This eliminates the energy losses associated with converting electricity to alternating current (AC).
- Sustainability: The unit requires no extensive site preparation, leaves no environmental footprint, and operates without water consumption.
Rethinking AI Architecture
The company has already implemented its first operational unit at a 200 MW solar facility in Texas, utilizing existing infrastructure without any modifications. Industry experts see this as a critical advancement. According to Santo Politi, Founder and General Partner of Spark Capital, «Every renewable asset in operation becomes a potential deployment site. Rune is the fastest path to new capacity we have seen.»
Rune’s leadership emphasizes that the current industry practice of retrofitting legacy data centers is insufficient for modern AI needs.
