For over a decade, I relegated Siri to basic functions like setting timers, primarily because it struggled to understand natural language. However, the introduction of Siri AI in iOS 27 has fundamentally shifted that narrative. By evolving into a conversational assistant that deeply integrates with the iPhone’s ecosystem, Apple has created a tool that rivals modern voice assistants like ChatGPT.


Mastering Personal Context

One of the most significant upgrades is the assistant’s ability to navigate personal data. For a self-proclaimed digital hoarder with tens of thousands of photos and endless emails, finding specific information was previously a chore. Unlike traditional versions that required precise, rigid phrasing, the new Siri understands vague requests:

  • "What was the name of that restaurant Steve mentioned?"
  • "When is that appointment I received an email about?"

This capability allows users to retrieve information without manually scouring different apps, making the assistant feel far more intuitive than previous iterations.


Contextual Awareness on Screen

A major advantage of Siri AI is its OS-level integration. When looking at a document or an image, I no longer need to export or upload files to a third-party chatbot. I can simply invoke Siri and say, «Remind me about this tomorrow.» The assistant is already aware of my screen's context, eliminating the extra steps that usually come with external AI tools.


Conversational Continuity

Previously, interacting with Siri felt like a one-off command. Now, the experience mirrors the back-and-forth nature of models like ChatGPT. During my testing, I requested dinner ideas based on specific fridge ingredients and constraints. When I didn't like the first option, I could simply refine my request, and the assistant maintained the thread of the conversation seamlessly.


Bridging the Gap Between Knowledge and Action

While ChatGPT may still hold an edge in deep reasoning or brainstorming complex ideas, Siri AI excels at execution. Because it has direct access to the device's functions, it doesn't just provide answers; it takes action. As I noted during my day of testing:

Ultimately, the two tools serve different purposes. While I will continue to use ChatGPT for complex projects, the new Siri has become an indispensable utility for managing the day-to-day operations on my iPhone.
