Valve’s Summer Hardware Roadmap

Valve has officially confirmed that both the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame are scheduled to ship later this summer. The announcement came via a recent company blog post, which also outlined the expansion of the 'Verified' program to include these upcoming devices.

Regarding the user experience, Valve stated:

«Today we are expanding the Verified program to include Steam Machine and Steam Frame, both of which are shipping this summer. As with Steam Deck Verified, the goal is to help customers understand the out-of-box experience for a given title on these new devices, and how smoothly a game will run with no user work or configuration required.»

Despite the confirmation of the launch window, Valve has remained silent on the cost of the hardware. Given recent trends and price adjustments seen with the Steam Deck, industry observers are cautious, with many speculating that the Steam Machine could carry a premium price tag exceeding $1,000. Expectations for the Steam Frame remain even more speculative at this time.

Industry Challenges and Rising Hardware Costs

The uncertainty surrounding pricing reflects broader difficulties within the current hardware market. Rising costs for essential components have become a significant hurdle for manufacturers.

Highlighting this trend, industry discussions have noted significant spikes in memory and storage expenses. Experts have pointed out that, contrary to historical trends where component costs would drop over time, the current climate—partially driven by the surge in AI infrastructure—has caused costs to escalate sharply.

This shift represents a difficult period for the gaming community. Unlike previous hardware generations, where console prices would reliably decrease throughout their lifecycle, modern gaming hardware is increasingly expensive to manufacture and purchase. While there is hope that Valve will leverage its position to maintain competitive pricing, current market dynamics suggest that keeping costs low will be a formidable challenge.
