A New Sonic Direction for a Classic Platformer

Following the recent announcement at the PlayStation State of Play, it has been confirmed that the 2013 fan-favorite Rayman Legends is receiving a comprehensive 3D remake titled Rayman Legends Retold. Beyond the visual overhaul, the project boasts a revamped soundtrack featuring a collaboration between the original series composer, Christophe Héral, and industry icon Grant Kirkhope.

Kirkhope, whose storied career includes beloved scores for Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, continues to be a major force in the industry, having contributed to titles such as A Hat in Time and Yooka-Laylee.

Aligning with Rayman’s Signature Whimsy

Production director Alessandro Arndt Mucchi emphasized that bringing Kirkhope on board was a natural decision due to his deep understanding of lighthearted, comedic game design. "He really gets that," Mucchi noted, pointing to Kirkhope’s history of work on whimsical titles. The pairing of Kirkhope with Héral has resulted in a wealth of new musical compositions that the team describes as brilliant.

The Remarkable Efficiency of a Veteran

For animation director Marco Renso, working alongside such a seasoned professional has been a surprising and impressive experience, particularly regarding Kirkhope’s rapid creative process:

«Grant is insanely fast as a composer. It's crazy, like just in so little time he comes up with something amazing, it's outstanding honestly, it's very surprising. He comes in one day later with something unbelievable, like he's super fast to react, and it's crazy.»

Renso credited this output to sheer talent, noting that he is continuously left in awe of how Kirkhope maintains such high-quality standards while working at such an accelerated pace.
