A Battle for FPS Supremacy

First-person shooter (FPS) games have long been the backbone of PC gaming culture. From high-stakes competitive matches to casual skirmishes, the genre offers a diverse range of experiences that define how we play and interact with one another. To celebrate this variety, we are kicking off a single-elimination tournament to find out which FPS mode reigns supreme.

While the genre contains countless variations, we have selected 16 of the most enduring and recognizable formats to compete for the title. This is a curated look at the classics that have shaped the FPS landscape over the decades.

The Tournament Structure

The competition is organized into a bracket format. To keep things standardized, we are using generic names for these modes, though many have become famous under different titles across various franchises. The first round is now underway, and the progression of the tournament relies entirely on reader participation.

Round 1 Matchups

The opening stage features several high-profile clashes. Here is a breakdown of the categories currently vying for the top spot:

  • Deathmatch vs. Team Deathmatch: The classic dilemma of individual glory versus team-based tactics.
  • Battle Royale vs. Tactical Shooters: Pitting two massive, genre-defining formats against each other.
  • Conquest vs. Domination: Large-scale vehicular warfare compared to the fast-paced, infantry-focused point capture.
  • Search and Destroy vs. Hostage Rescue: The ultimate test of one-life elimination strategy.
  • Gun Game vs. Payload: Choosing between the solo challenge of weapon progression or the coordinated effort of moving an objective.
  • Infection vs. Prop Hunt: A face-off between the industry's most beloved asymmetrical party modes.
  • VIP vs. Juggernaut: Testing which objective mode handles the concept of a "high-value target" best.
  • Attack/Defend vs. King of the Hill: Deciding between structured front-line assaults and the frantic battle for a moving objective.

As noted, these matchups highlight some of the most popular experiences in gaming history. While many modes share similar DNA, these core formats represent the foundation of the FPS experience.
