Defining Unique Roles in Rainbow Six Tactics

For the development of Rainbow Six Tactics, the team at Ubisoft placed a high priority on ensuring each of the 15 available Operators feels distinct. Game director Martial Potron emphasized that establishing unique identities for every character was a fundamental aspect of the creative direction.

In a conversation at Gamescom, Potron explained to media representatives why this distinction was vital: «It was part of the creative process to make sure that every Operator would serve one turf course in the experience, so we really made sure that all Operators were unique: unique gadgets, unique playstyles, unique progression. It was crucial for us, in fact, that we didn't have too much overlap with other Operators.»

Curating the Roster

The upcoming turn-based strategy title will feature a curated list of 15 characters. Confirmed Operators currently include staples of the franchise such as Ash, Sledge, Glaz, Montagne, Doc, and Nokk. Balancing the roster meant incorporating fan-requested characters while maintaining strict gameplay mechanics.

Potron admitted that the selection process involved difficult trade-offs:

  • Fan Favorites: Characters like Sledge and Ash were considered essential inclusions.
  • Personal Cuts: The director noted that some personal favorites, such as Tachanka and Lion, did not make the final cut due to the necessity of making hard design decisions.

Future Outlook

As the team approaches the release date, the focus remains entirely on delivering a polished single-player experience. Regarding the potential for post-launch additions to the roster, Potron indicated that there are no immediate plans to expand the character count.

«For the launch, it's not something we are digging into,» Potron stated. «We are very close to releasing a fantastic single-player experience, and so [we're] focused on the release date; shipping something amazing, and we'll see [about] the future.»

Rainbow Six Tactics is currently scheduled to launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
