While modern users are accustomed to a rainbow of Ethernet cable colors—ranging from standard black and white to vibrant greens and reds—the history of these essential networking components began with a singular, striking hue. During the 1970s, when the Ethernet specification was in its infancy, these cables were exclusively yellow.
The Aesthetic Choice
The choice of color was initially influenced by Rich Seifert, one of the primary architects of the Ethernet specification. In a recent presentation at the Vintage Computer Festival, Seifert revealed that the specific shade chosen was known as "1968 Corvette yellow" (also referred to by automotive enthusiasts as "Safari yellow"). Seifert openly admitted that his personal affinity for the color played a significant role in the design, noting, «It's my favorite color. I drove a yellow car, I have yellow furniture.»
Safety First: Preventing Dangerous Mistakes
Beyond personal taste, there was a crucial technical and safety-driven motive behind the bright coloring. During the early days of networking, Ethernet did not utilize the thin twisted-pair cables common today. Instead, it relied on thick coaxial cabling.
Installation required a technique involving "vampire taps," which physically pierced the cable's protective rubber shielding to establish a connection. Seifert expressed concerns regarding the inherent dangers of this installation process:
«This stuff was strung up in ceilings, and it'd run all over the place and you'd drop taps down from the ceiling. To attach a transceiver to this thing, it would clamp on, so you'd literally have to drill into the cable. There are a whole lot of cables up there in the ceiling. I did not want anyone drilling into a power cable. This would not be a good idea. So I wanted to make sure you could distinguish the power cable from the ethernet cable, so I made this thing as bright as I could possibly make it.»
Evolution of Ethernet Technology
The original Ethernet specification was remarkably visionary, offering a 10 megabit-per-second capacity that far exceeded the needs of hardware at the time. However, the technology was incredibly demanding in its early years.

- Power Consumption: The system consumed roughly 60 watts of power.
To put this in perspective, today's compact hardware, such as the Raspberry Pi 5, operates with an integrated Ethernet controller while drawing only 27 watts, illustrating just how far networking technology has advanced since the days of high-visibility yellow coaxial cables.
