A resident of Hong Kong recently fell victim to a sophisticated cyber-fraud operation, losing HK$10 million (approximately $1.27 million) after being deceived by artificial intelligence. Perpetrators utilized AI voice-cloning technology to mimic the victim’s father on WhatsApp, compelling the man to transfer large sums of money under the guise of an urgent financial emergency.

According to reports from the Hong Kong police’s Cyberdefender unit, the scammers initiated contact via voice notes. The victim was convinced of the caller's identity because the

“voice and manner of speech matched his father's.”
This sense of familiarity led the victim to fulfill multiple requests until his entire savings were depleted.


Expert Advice: How to Defend Against Voice Cloning

Law enforcement officials have issued a stern warning regarding the evolving sophistication of synthetic media.

“Do not blindly trust voice messages. Even if the voice sounds similar, it does not necessarily mean it is accurate,”
the Hong Kong police stated in a recent advisory.

To mitigate the risk of falling prey to these digital impersonators, authorities and security experts recommend several protective measures:

  • Independent Verification: If you receive an urgent request from a contact, disconnect the call immediately and reach out to the person via a known, trusted phone number.
  • Account Security: Ensure two-factor authentication (2FA) is activated on all your accounts and regularly audit the list of connected devices, removing any that appear unrecognized.
  • Establish a Codeword: Create a secret, mutually agreed-upon codeword for emergencies. Because
    “Deepfake scams might use your voice, but they don't know what's in your head,”
    having a password that only your inner circle knows provides a reliable way to verify identity.

Recognizing the Red Flags

Scammers rely on manufactured urgency to induce panic, preventing targets from thinking critically. Anti-scam advocate Gary Schildhorn suggests remaining vigilant for three primary warning signs:

  1. Artificial Pressure: The caller insists that the situation must be resolved immediately.
  2. Untraceable Payment Methods: Requests for money via cryptocurrency, gift cards, or physical cash.
  3. Communication Control: The scammer demands that you do not speak to anyone else or verify the request with other family members.
