A Bold New Look for Home Robotics

DJI has officially unveiled its second-generation robot vacuum, the Romo 2 series, positioning the device as a piece of "future-forward home decor" rather than a standard appliance. Departing from the minimalist, glossy design trends currently dominating the market, the Romo 2 boasts a distinctive, curvaceous form.

The lineup includes two models: the P2, which features a semi-transparent chassis revealing the device's internal components, such as filters and mechanisms, and the A2, which offers a more traditional opaque aesthetic. The translucent P2 model has drawn comparisons to the iconic iMac G3 of the 1990s, offering a unique visual identity that prioritizes industrial design.


Leveraging Aerial Expertise for Terrestrial Cleaning

DJI is applying its extensive experience in drone technology to the home cleaning sector. The company claims that by integrating aerial robotics intelligence, the Romo 2 establishes a new benchmark for home automation.

Central to this performance is an advanced navigation suite. The vacuum utilizes a combination of Structured-Light Speckle Projector LiDAR and dual-eye fisheye vision sensors to generate high-precision 3D maps in real time. According to the manufacturer, these sensors allow the device to detect obstacles as small as 2mm and navigate complex surfaces like glass partitions or mirrors with high accuracy.


Enhanced Mechanical Capabilities

The Romo 2 is equipped with several innovative hardware features designed to improve coverage and efficacy:

  • Adaptive Mobility: The unit includes pop-out wheels that enable it to climb over single steps up to 1.6 inches (4cm) and double steps reaching up to 3.3 inches (8.5cm).
  • Flexible Mopping: The mop pad features a 123-degree swing mechanism, extending its reach by nearly 3 inches (7.8cm) to access areas under low-profile furniture.
  • AI-Driven Spill Detection: The robot uses integrated artificial intelligence to identify whether a spill is liquid or solid. When liquid is detected, the machine deploys its robotic mop arm specifically to address the spill, keeping its wheels clear of the mess.

Addressing Security and Privacy

Following historical security concerns associated with its predecessor, DJI has placed a significant focus on user privacy for the second-gen model. The Romo 2 introduces a "Local Data Mode." When enabled, this feature completely disconnects the DJI Home app from the internet. This ensures that sensitive data, including floor plans, camera footage, and voice logs, remains stored exclusively on the local device, preventing any potential external access.
