New Achievement Categorization
Valve has launched a significant update for the Steam client beta that fundamentally changes how achievements are structured and presented. Developers now have the tools to create specialized achievement sets tailored to specific parts of their games, such as character-class milestones or single-player campaigns. Crucially, this system allows for the clear separation of base game accomplishments from those linked to expansions, DLC, or seasonal content.
Solving the "Completionist" Problem
Previously, Steam users faced a frustrating issue: if a game added new achievements via DLC, the player's previously earned 100% completion status would decrease. For dedicated completionists, this meant their achievements were no longer "tidy" unless they purchased and finished the additional content. This update effectively solves the dilemma by keeping DLC and base game achievements distinct, provided that developers opt to utilize the new framework.
According to Valve, this logic also applies to time-limited seasonal content:
«The example Valve uses is a set called "Halloween Event Achievements" which are valid for a certain period and don't affect the achievement count of the base game.»
Essentially, skipping a seasonal event will no longer penalize a user's total progress stats for the core game.
Updated Interface and Social Features
To accommodate these structural changes, the Steam achievements page has received a complete redesign. The interface now consolidates key information onto a single page, offering a clearer overview of both overall progress and individual task completion.
One of the most requested features now making its debut is the ability to compare achievements directly with friends. Users can now view side-by-side comparisons with up to three friends simultaneously, bringing Steam closer to the feature sets long enjoyed by PlayStation console players. While the system is currently in beta and not yet universal across the entire Steam catalog, early adopters—such as LEGO Batman: Legacy of the—have already begun integrating these features.
