Valve has partnered with iFixit to provide a full suite of 18 official repair guides for the Steam Machine. These manuals cover everything from routine maintenance and cleaning to more complex procedures like replacing the cooling fan, SSD, and even the motherboard. Much like the existing support for the Steam Deck, these guides are meticulously detailed, providing clear instructions for device owners.


The Complexity of RAM Upgrades

While the availability of these guides is a welcome development for repairability, they have also unveiled a significant hurdle for those looking to upgrade their hardware. The process for accessing and replacing the system RAM has proven to be quite labor-intensive.


According to the documentation, replacing the memory requires a staggering 49 individual steps. Users must essentially dismantle a large portion of the device to reach the RAM slots, creating a scenario where, according to some community feedback, the risk of accidental damage is non-trivial.


Technical Challenges and Risks

The intricacy of the process has sparked concern among users. As noted by a reader of VideoCardz,

«Upgrading RAM is super annoying. They should place it near SSD or something in the next revision, because as it is now you have to basically dismantle the whole damn thing. Not that it's particularly 'hard' to do, but it's super annoying and you can actually damage something, like Wi-Fi antennas for example.»

While Valve and iFixit currently offer parts for the Steam Deck, inventory for the Steam Machine is not yet widely available as the company focuses on prioritizing production. It is expected that as supply stabilizes, a wider range of parts will be stocked for consumer purchase.
