A Realistic Approach to Survival Gaming

Many of us have wondered how we would handle being stranded in the wilderness without basic resources. While most of us prefer to keep such scenarios safely contained within movies or video games, one developer took things to the extreme. Wordless Forest, which recently debuted on Steam, is a unique survival experience crafted by solo developer Dogus Cagrici.

To ensure authenticity, Cagrici spent 40 days trekking through the dense wilderness across four different regions in Turkey. He filmed the entire project himself, resulting in an FMV (Full Motion Video) game that features no dialogue, perfectly reflecting the isolation of his protagonist.


The Gameplay Mechanics

In the game, the protagonist wakes up with a head injury and fragmented memories. Your goal is to guide him toward a distant firewatch tower while navigating a series of life-or-death decisions. The experience plays out through a sequence of choices:

  • Scavenging: Deciding whether to consume potentially tainted food found at abandoned sites.
  • Exploration: Weighing the risks of entering dark caves for shelter against the dangers they might hide.
  • Prioritization: Choosing between searching for your lost dog or staying on the path to safety.

These decisions are presented as simple binary choices, driving the narrative forward based on your instincts.


An Interactive Cinematic Experience

While early user feedback on Steam has been mixed, the game stands out for its commitment to a "show, don't tell" narrative style. The developer’s dedication is evident in the production; Cagrici handled every aspect of the filming himself, including demanding physical tasks like climbing cliffs and venturing into caves.

"I appreciate stories that can be told with minimal dialogue, especially survival stories. It's the extreme of the 'show, don't tell' rule, and Wordless Forest does a good job pulling it off," notes the experience of the game's silent, immersive storytelling.

Although some players may view it as more of an interactive movie due to its shorter runtime and focused gameplay, it remains a compelling look at the survival genre. For those interested in this experimental project, it is currently available on Steam with a launch discount.
