Setting the Timeline for The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red has officially identified 2028 as the target release window for the highly anticipated next installment in the Witcher franchise, The Witcher 4. Despite the excitement surrounding the studio's presence at Gamescom 2026, joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski clarified that the fourth title will not be featured during this year's event. Instead, the studio is focusing its current promotional efforts on a new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past

Ahead of Gamescom Opening Night Live, the studio teased a new project titled Songs of the Past. This third expansion for The Witcher 3 is scheduled for release in 2027. Nowakowski noted, «We've got a lot of the expansion to show off, including a taste of its dark story, and the new continent it will bring.» Industry reports suggest that this expansion will serve as a narrative bridge leading directly into the events of the upcoming sequel, which is widely expected to feature Ciri as the protagonist.

Development Scope and Ambition

The development of The Witcher 4 is currently a massive undertaking, involving a team of over 500 developers. Providing insight into the project's scale, Nowakowski stated:

«Simply put, this is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date. It will feature a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story that we hope will stay with you for a long time.»

Looking Toward the Future

While the 2028 target provides a clearer roadmap for fans, the studio cautions that the release date remains subject to the progress of development, with a potential shift to 2029 if necessary. Addressing the community's eagerness, the joint-CEO asked for patience, adding, «I know it's a bit of a wait and you'd love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.»

Furthermore, uncertainty surrounds the potential for physical disc releases for next-generation consoles, given Sony's reported plans to phase out physical game media production starting in January 2028. CD Projekt Red has indicated that they intend to maintain a presence at Gamescom for the foreseeable future, leaving the door open for a major reveal of the sequel in the coming years.
