The Importance of Early Exploration

Mortal Shell 2 is packed with powerful gear, from formidable Tarstones to unique weaponry. However, some items are tucked away in a manner that makes them easy to miss if you aren't thorough during your initial playthrough. One specific item in the early stages of the game is so transformative that it can significantly simplify even the toughest encounters. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that skipping this item is a mistake you’ll regret later.

The Power of Vatra's Seal

During the game's prologue, you will encounter the Tar Golem. While this fight is scripted as a forced loss to progress the narrative, the aftermath provides an opportunity to loot the corpse of your first shell, Haros. This is where you obtain the Vatra's Seal.

This seal is incredibly potent. Unlike its iteration in the first game, where it was tied to a specific character, this version allows any shell to harden its body, effectively nullifying incoming damage and freezing the player in mid-animation. It serves as both a defensive mechanism and an offensive tool: by timing the hardening correctly, you can execute a perfect parry, dealing massive posture damage to your foes.

A Costly Oversight

My experience in the game was hampered by a simple, impulsive decision. Because I had enjoyed the beta version, I chose to replay the prologue for the experience. After the scripted defeat of the Tar Golem, I neglected to loot Haros' body and rushed straight into the next region. By the time I realized the Vatra's Seal was missing—about 15 hours into my journey—it was too late; the prologue area had become inaccessible.

Currently, I am forced to rely on the Untarnished Seal. While functional, it lacks the versatility of the Vatra's Seal. The alternative seals available to me either require precise parrying without the safety net of total damage negation or lack the critical defensive guard entirely. I am effectively missing the best of both worlds because I failed to perform a simple action at the start of the game.

Advice for New Players

If you are just beginning your adventure in Mortal Shell 2, take this as a warning: do not skip looting Haros' body. Having the Vatra's Seal in your inventory provides a tactical advantage that you will surely appreciate as the game's difficulty scales.

In other news, the developers at Cold Symmetry have recently deployed a patch to improve the overall gameplay balance. This update introduces adjustments such as nerfing certain boss encounters and increasing gold drops throughout the world to assist players on their journey.
