Sigma has announced the 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary, a bright ultra-wide prime lens for APS-C cameras that is significantly lighter than its predecessor, the 16mm f/1.4. Unveiled on February 24, the new lens is 50% lighter at 220g (7.8 oz) and 30% shorter, making it the lightest in Sigma's Contemporary series.

The lens will be available in three mounts: Canon RF, Fujifilm X, and Sony E. Notably, the Canon RF mount is included, marking a continued trend of third-party autofocus lenses for this system, while Nikon Z, L Mount, and Micro Four Thirds are absent for now, though Sigma may release them later.

Optically, the 15mm f/1.4 outperforms the 16mm, with improved edge-to-edge sharpness and reduced sagittal coma flare, particularly beneficial for astrophotography. It also suppresses lens flare and ghosting. The lens is designed for both stills and video, featuring a stepping motor for quiet autofocus and minimized focus breathing.

Dust and moisture seals are included, with a control ring on the Canon RF version and an aperture ring on Fujifilm X and Sony E models. The lens joins the Contemporary series, which focuses on portable, bright primes for APS-C cameras (12mm to 56mm range).

Announced ahead of the CP+ show in Japan alongside a new 35mm f/1.4 full-frame lens, the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC DN starts shipping on March 12 at a price of $579 / £449.
