Monotype has upgraded Gotham, one of the world's most popular typefaces, introducing Gotham Variable. This major evolution provides continuous control over weight and width within a single, performance-optimized file.

Designed by Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones, Gotham debuted on the January 2001 cover of GQ and has since been used by global brands such as Netflix, Coca-Cola, the United States Postal Service, and Saturday Night Live. Twenty-five years later, it enters a new era with enhanced creative control and adaptability.

Gotham Variable consolidates multiple static files into one streamlined file, improving performance, reducing load times, and simplifying implementation across platforms. It offers 54 new intermediate styles, including subtle weight variations and a new Compact width.

Sara Soskolne, executive creative director at Monotype, explains: 'Reverse engineering variability into an existing and widely used family is trickier than creating a new variable family from scratch. We waited until variable fonts reached critical mass adoption before working on Gotham.'

Gotham was a natural choice for this upgrade due to its trusted legacy across political campaigns, billboards, and iconic brand identities. Soskolne notes: 'We tried to imagine what this typeface could become without losing sight of its powerful legacy. Many styles in Gotham Variable never existed before, and making them feel like they always belonged was the hardest part.'

The update also expands language support, including Vietnamese with complex diacritics and stacked accents, as well as enhanced Cyrillic and Bulgarian characters. Jordan Bell, senior type designer at Monotype, emphasizes the importance of matching Gotham's expressiveness for new glyphs.

Soskolne adds: 'My relationship with Gotham spans nearly 20 years. Adding variable functionality and Vietnamese support required careful handling to maintain the family's integrity. We kept everything backwards compatible, only expanding what's available to users.'

Gotham Variable is now available on Monotype Fonts, Monotype Connect, and MyFonts.
