Perplexity has activated a significant upgrade to the voice mode in its Comet browser. Desktop users can access it immediately, with iOS support arriving within days. This feature allows for complete hands-free control, enabling users to open websites, scroll pages, and follow links entirely through voice commands.

On desktop, the mode is activated with Shift+Alt+V (or Shift+Option+V on Mac). The upcoming iOS version aims to transform Comet into a potentially touch-free mobile browser. The technology is powered by OpenAI's latest real-time model, gpt-realtime-1.5, designed for low-latency interaction. Perplexity reports over 25% improvement in tool-call stability for more reliable performance.

Unlike typical voice search, Comet's system is built for full browsing navigation. The goal is ambient computing, where voice carries the entire session. The browser also emphasizes privacy, processing voice locally when possible and not storing cloud-based click histories or building ad profiles.

The feature is live on desktop now, with iOS rollout expected around March 11. Future developments for Comet include a personalized assistant, a password manager, and cross-device sync.
