OpenAI has released new data from millions of consumer ChatGPT messages, revealing how people use the AI outside of work. The analysis categorizes interactions into three types: asking for information, doing tasks, and expressing thoughts or feelings.
The 'expressing' category is a consistent part of usage, indicating users find value in the chatbot beyond mere utility. This expressive use involves sharing opinions or feelings without expecting a specific output, not just emotional venting.
Younger users, particularly those aged 18-34, drive most of this personal engagement. Global usage data shows per-capita message rankings by country, with the US receiving a state-by-state breakdown. OpenAI notes several major countries are excluded from the data.
The company plans to update this dataset over time to track whether these personal, expressive interactions continue to grow as AI relationships evolve.
