Nikon has introduced the successor to the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, a lens previously hailed as the best 70-200mm zoom in the world. Following the pattern of the updated Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II, this second-generation telephoto zoom has been completely redesigned.
The new Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II features Nikon’s latest autofocus system, reengineered S-Line optics, enhanced image stabilization, improved ergonomics, and a lighter build. Weighing only 998 grams—362 grams less than its predecessor—the lens offers better balance and agility for handheld shooting and gimbal use.
Key upgrades include up to 6 stops of Vibration Reduction, a Silky Swift voice coil motor for autofocus that is 3.5 times faster and 50% quieter, and a new optical construction with fewer but more effective elements. The minimum focus distance has been reduced to 0.38m at 70mm, allowing for greater magnification.
Additional improvements include an 11-blade aperture for smoother bokeh, an Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot, a de-clickable control ring for video, and enhanced weather sealing. The lens is priced at $3,196.95 / £2,999 / AU$5,399 and will be showcased at The Photography & Video Show in Birmingham from March 14-17.
