The Rapid Evolution of Physical AI

While the conversation around artificial intelligence often centers on software-based roles, the focus is shifting toward how AI integrates into the physical world. David Reger, founder and CEO of the German-based firm Neura Robotics, suggests that we are standing on the brink of a massive transformation in the labor market. During a recent interview with Bloomberg, Reger characterized the speed of current progress in robotics and physical AI as “tremendous.”


According to Reger, the transition is moving much faster than many experts anticipated.

“I think physical AI and robotics will take over every physical task,”
he stated, clarifying that this shift is expected to occur within the next two to five years rather than over a decade. A key component of his outlook is the efficiency of these systems, as Reger asserts that he can now train a robot for a specific task more rapidly than a human being.


Industrial Integration and Future Trends

Currently, the presence of robotics in daily consumer life is limited largely to household maintenance devices like vacuum cleaners and robotic lawnmowers. However, the industrial sector is already experiencing a surge in automation, particularly within automotive assembly lines.


The movement toward humanoid robotics is gaining momentum globally. For example, Japan is pursuing an ambitious project to deploy over 10 million humanoid robots across various sectors by 2040, supported by government backing. These machines are intended to assist in:

  • Manufacturing and industrial production
  • Disaster relief operations
  • Elderly care services
  • Complex decommissioning projects, such as the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

The Push for Accessible Robotics

Historically, advanced humanoid robots have been prohibitively expensive, often costing tens of thousands of dollars and remaining restricted to academic or industrial research. However, a new wave of startups is working to change this. San Francisco-based Nor Robotics recently introduced the Nori A3, a humanoid robot priced at under $2,000, aimed at bringing sophisticated technology into the domestic sphere.


The Nori A3 is designed with impressive specifications to handle household chores:

  • Payload capacity: Capable of lifting up to 122 pounds.
  • Battery life: Provides six to eight hours of operation.
  • Dexterity: Features 19 degrees of freedom, allowing it to perform tasks such as folding laundry, loading dishwashers, and pouring beverages.

As the cost of hardware continues to decline, the integration of these robots into everyday life appears increasingly inevitable, marking a potential turning point in how society approaches physical labor and domestic assistance.
