According to CEO Nick Bolton, the organization has viewed itself as a technology company since its inception, constantly upgrading tools—from 18th-century surveying equipment to modern digital processing—to ensure precision.

This commitment to innovation accelerated in the 1970s with the introduction of digitizing tools. Today, the OS continues that trajectory by leveraging artificial intelligence to manage and interpret vast amounts of geospatial data.


Integrating AI into Geospatial Analysis

For the OS, AI is not a recent discovery; the organization has been utilizing machine learning for over a decade. A primary focus has been the automated extraction of geographical features from high-resolution aerial imagery, which the OS collects across the UK every three years.

Bolton emphasizes that the institution avoids the hype surrounding generative AI, focusing instead on practical automation and data integrity. «We see AI in the bracket of automation—more than a human replacement,» Bolton explains. He notes that the next frontier for the agency is Agentic AI, which will allow the OS to share its extensive knowledge base more effectively with both public and private sector partners.


The Importance of Data Trust

As the agency leans further into automated systems, maintaining the trust that defined its reputation for over two centuries is paramount. The organization has established an AI Charter to guide its adoption of new technologies, ensuring that decisions—such as identifying flood-prone areas for new housing developments—remain traceable to concrete data.

«There’s always going to require some form of human check on it, until such a time that we can feel confidence in the output,» says Bolton. «Making sure we go slowly, preserving that this decision or that insight can be traced back to this set of data means therefore I can have a high confidence in it.»

Location as a Universal Connector

The Ordnance Survey views location data as the ultimate tool for connecting disparate datasets. By collaborating with organizations like the Office for National Statistics, HM Land Registry, and the Met Office, the OS provides actionable insights for diverse challenges, including disaster response, infrastructure management, and urban planning.

Looking ahead, Bolton maintains that the core mission remains the same: providing authoritative, high-quality data. By partnering with external vendors to integrate this data into various software solutions, the OS continues to scale its ambitions, transforming from a traditional mapper into a modern data engine that serves the evolving needs of the UK infrastructure.
