A Fusion of High-End Audio Engineering

Naim has officially introduced its latest flagship wireless music system, the Mu-so Utopia. Building upon the performance of the previously released Focal Mu-so Hekla, this new model integrates Naim’s signature amplification prowess with advanced acoustic technology derived from Focal’s prestigious Utopia loudspeaker series.

Engineered to fill rooms up to 50m² with sound, the system utilizes a robust 720-watt amplification configuration, split between Class D and Class A/B, to power a total of 15 individual drive units.

Acoustic Architecture and Precision

The interior design focuses on delivering an immersive audio experience through a sophisticated array of components:

  • Midrange and Full-Range Drivers: Several drivers, including 2.75cm 'M-shaped' midrange woofers, are handled by Class D amplification.
  • PRISM Tweeters: The unit features twin 25mm 'PRISM' tweeters, technology directly trickled down from Focal’s top-tier Scala and Diva Utopia speakers. These are powered by Class A/B amplification, chosen specifically by engineers to provide superior control over delicate high-frequency output.

Streaming, Connectivity, and Features

The Mu-so Utopia is built for modern convenience, supporting a wide range of high-resolution formats, including PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD128. Connectivity options are extensive, ensuring users can integrate the system into various setups:

«Dolby Atmos support is a primary highlight of the system, offering users a variety of listening modes, such as a dedicated Dolby Movie setting and 'Sphere Music,' which utilizes beamforming microphone technology to create a 3D audio soundstage.»

Wireless streaming is facilitated via Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, and Bluetooth 5.3. For wired setups, the device includes HDMI eARC for home cinema integration, optical inputs, an RCA subwoofer output, and an ethernet port.

Design and Availability

The unit retains the familiar aesthetic of previous Mu-so iterations, featuring an anodized aluminum chassis highlighted by a distinct red trim. Measuring 40cm in length and weighing approximately 14kg, it is a substantial piece of equipment that requires dedicated space. Users can interact with the system via a tactile illuminated dial on the top, which serves as both a volume controller and a touch-sensitive interface for power and input management.

Positioned as a luxury offering, the Naim Mu-so Utopia launches at £4499 / $5500. While this represents a significant investment compared to earlier models, the integration of trickle-down high-end technology aims to justify the premium price tag.
