A New Vision for Autonomous Cleaning
At IFA 2026, iRobot introduced the Roomba Duo, a prototype cleaning system that moves away from the standard single-unit design. Instead, the company is experimenting with a collaborative approach: a robust primary robot capable of vacuuming and steam-mopping, working in tandem with a miniature companion device engineered to access narrow or confined spaces where standard robots typically struggle.
Technology and Navigation
Both components of the Duo system utilize advanced navigation suites, including ClearView Pro LiDAR and PrecisionVision AI, to ensure efficient obstacle avoidance. The primary unit is equipped with elevated AI cameras that allow for precise room mapping and the identification of high-traffic or heavily soiled areas. Additionally, the main vacuum is built with 17cm wheels, providing the necessary clearance to traverse various flooring types and transitions.
Maintenance and Specialized Cleaning
The system is supported by an AutoWash dock, which handles the heavy lifting of maintenance tasks. This station is designed for autonomy, managing mop cleaning and drying, dust extraction, and water replenishment. According to the manufacturer, the onboard debris storage is designed to hold several months of waste, significantly reducing the frequency of user interaction.
The secondary, smaller robot acts as a specialist for difficult spots. It is specifically tasked with navigating under low-profile furniture and cleaning corners where debris and pet hair frequently accumulate. Its design includes features like:
- A PerfectEdge mop that extends up to 31mm.
- A specialized side brush optimized for cleaning along baseboards and walls.
Future Prospects
While iRobot also introduced the more traditional Roomba Max 875 Combo Robot + AutoWash Dock at the same event, the Roomba Duo serves as a window into the company's experimental research. Although the Duo is currently strictly a concept with no official commercial launch date, it represents a significant shift in how iRobot imagines the future of automated home maintenance.
