A Bold Entry into the Gimbal Space
Insta360 has officially unveiled its latest innovation, the Luna Ultra, marking the company’s first foray into the dedicated gimbal camera market. By launching ahead of schedule, the brand has positioned itself as a formidable rival to established players, specifically targeting the anticipated DJI Osmo Pocket 4P. The device stands out by mounting dual cameras on a stabilized gimbal handle, offering a unique hardware configuration for content creators.
Innovative Design and Remote Control
The standout feature of the Luna Ultra is its versatile, detachable remote control unit. This component houses a 2-inch OLED touchscreen, a joystick for precise movement, and a built-in microphone. The clever design integrates a small, built-in mini-tripod and advanced AI-driven subject tracking, effectively turning the compact device into an all-in-one portable production studio.
At a recent hands-on event at Leica HQ in Wetzlar, Germany, users were able to test the remote capabilities firsthand. The ability to place the camera on a fixed surface, detach the controller to frame the shot, and monitor the feed in real-time proved to be a highly intuitive workflow for solo filmmakers.
Collaborative Optical Engineering
The Luna Ultra is the result of a deep partnership between Insta360 and Leica. As Marius Eschweiler, VP at Leica, noted:
«It reflects the shared vision and long-term collaboration between Insta360 and Leica, combining optical heritage with a new generation of intelligent imaging technology.»
This cooperation extends to the camera's lens optics and proprietary software, including specialized Leica color profiles: Natural, Vivid, and Chrome.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The device packs impressive internal hardware designed for high-end professional output:
- Video Resolution: 8K recording at 30fps with Dolby Vision support.
- Imaging: 37-megapixel "UltraPhotos" and 200-megapixel automated panoramic stitching.
- Storage and Color: 47GB of internal storage and 10-bit video capture.
- Audio: Native compatibility with wireless microphones, including the brand's own Mic Air.
Market Availability
The premium dual-camera Luna Ultra is priced at US$769.99 and is currently available in two color options: Cosmic Black and Stellar White. While it represents a significant leap forward for the category, the competition remains fierce, with rivals like DJI expected to release their own iterations in the near future.
