Revolutionizing Image Depth with Spatial Reframing

During the recent WWDC event, Apple officially introduced Spatial Reframing, a centerpiece of its upcoming iOS 27 update for iPhones and iPads. Unlike standard AI tools that merely extend the boundaries of a photo, this new feature allows users to essentially "move" the camera perspective after the shot has been captured.

By leveraging advanced generative AI, the system reconstructs the subject in a 3D space and generates a photorealistic background to match the new viewing angle. Observations of the demonstration indicate that the AI builds a 3D model, enabling it to accurately adjust elements—such as a subject's limbs—to align with the recalculated spatial position.


Evolution of Apple’s Depth Processing

While Spatial Reframing represents a significant advancement, the foundation for this technology has been present in recent iOS versions. Users of iOS 26 have already encountered subtle versions of this functionality, where the system automatically adds depth layers to existing photos. This effect, which becomes apparent when tilting the phone, demonstrates the AI's ability to distinguish subjects from background elements, such as arches or doors, to create a sense of immersion.

Beyond Spatial Reframing, Apple highlighted several other AI-driven updates:

  • Vision Pro Integration: The company announced plans to utilize AI to transform standard panoramic shots into "Spatial Scenes" compatible with the Vision Pro headset.
  • Performance Enhancements: While AI takes the spotlight, general system improvements are arguably more impactful for the average user. Photos are expected to load up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers will see an 80% speed boost.
  • Legacy Device Optimization: Improvements to the CPU scheduler are set to enhance performance across older hardware, providing a noticeable speed increase for devices as far back as the iPhone 11.
