During a speech at the University of Toronto, where he received an honorary degree, Sutskever emphasized that the shift toward automated systems is inevitable.

Sutskever highlighted that society must proactively prepare for a world where AI manages a vast array of human tasks. He noted that even individuals who currently dismiss or feel indifferent toward artificial intelligence will likely find their lives significantly altered by its progress in the coming years. Furthermore, he raised concerns regarding the nature of future systems, suggesting that a sufficiently advanced superintelligence might not always be transparent about its own objectives, creating potential existential risks that humanity will need to address.
The Evolution of the Superintelligence Debate
The quest for a superintelligent machine is not a new concept. It dates back to the work of British mathematician I.J. Good, who explored the implications of "ultraintelligent" machines decades ago. Since then, the scientific community has debated the trajectory toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—a system capable of matching human performance across diverse fields and self-improving its underlying code. This progress is expected to eventually culminate in the creation of Artificial Superintelligence (ASI).
However, the industry remains divided on whether the current reliance on transformer-based architectures—pioneered by Google researchers in 2017—is sufficient to reach true AGI. Many scholars argue that significant technological leaps will be required before we can achieve a machine intelligence that rivals or exceeds human cognition.
