A Fresh Visual Direction for Workspace

In anticipation of the upcoming Google I/O 2026 conference, the tech giant has begun deploying a refreshed set of icons for its core Workspace applications. Users will notice that staples like Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, and Tasks are transitioning toward a more fluid, gradient-heavy aesthetic.

This update marks a significant departure from the company's traditional four-color branding, which had remained a design constant for years. Following reports from last month that suggested a major visual overhaul was in the works, these changes are now officially appearing in the wild.

Current Availability and Implementation

For now, the new branding is primarily visible within the quick application launcher located in the top-right corner of the Google homepage. While the launcher reflects the modern look, individual applications often continue to display their legacy icons when opened directly. Industry observers anticipate a full, universal integration of these designs during or immediately following the Google I/O event.

Design Evolution Across Key Apps

The redesign focuses on softness and color blending, moving away from the rigid color separation used in previous versions. Key changes include:

  • Google Drive: The icon now emphasizes a blend of green, yellow, and blue, removing the distinct red corner element from its predecessor.
  • Gmail: Maintains the classic envelope silhouette but replaces solid colors with dynamic gradients.
  • Calendar: Adopts a cleaner, blue-centric palette.
  • Docs, Sheets, and Slides: Transition from flat, solid colors to a more nuanced, gradient-driven appearance.
  • Google Meet, Keep, and Tasks: These applications also feature simplified, softened designs, with Meet notably shifting toward a dominant yellow gradient.

The transition suggests that Google is prioritizing a more unified, modern feel for its ecosystem, replacing the strict color identity of the past with a more versatile and contemporary graphical approach.
