Explosive New Mechanics in Radiance

The preview season for the upcoming League of Legends TCG Riftbound: Radiance set is officially underway. Today, we are excited to exclusively unveil a powerful new card: Satchel Charge, along with a deeper look at the Bomb token it introduces to the game—a mechanic poised to make a significant impact upon release.


How Satchel Charge Works

Satchel Charge is a three-cost card that requires the recycling of a Chaos rune. Upon use, it functions as an Action, allowing players to relocate a friendly unit and subsequently Deploy a Bomb onto the battlefield.

The core strength of the Bomb lies in its secondary effect:

«Bombs deal 2 damage when they die (and set off all other Bombs you control at the same battlefield).»
This interacts dynamically with the new Deploy keyword, which enables players to place a Gear card directly onto any battlefield, regardless of current control, though the gear is destroyed if the opponent retains the location.


Strategic Depth and Versatility

The utility of Satchel Charge extends beyond simple unit movement. While it excels at repositioning units to safety or leaving behind an explosive trap, its flexibility allows for creative plays:

  • Moving a unit and a Bomb to the same location to maximize damage.
  • Splitting your assets across different battlefields to diversify your threat level.

Given its versatility, Satchel Charge appears to be a strong candidate for any Chaos-aligned Pre-Rift deck. Furthermore, if a new Legend synergy emerges that benefits from Deploy or Bomb mechanics, this card could easily transition into competitive constructed play.


Potential Drawbacks and Future Meta

Despite its power, the strategy has notable risks. Bombs only detonate when an opponent claims the location, forcing the player to concede a point before the trap triggers. Additionally, without a stockpile of explosives, individual Bombs may struggle to significantly weaken a well-established army.

Synergy will likely be the deciding factor for this card's success. With Ziggs’s Legend allowing for Bomb creation and his associated Champions providing damage buffs to Gear cards, the inclusion of Satchel Charge seems natural. Whether these explosive tactics will define the new meta remains to be seen when Radiance officially launches on October 23.
