Data indicates that 85.8% of Japanese developers have adopted AI, a massive jump from the 51% reported in the previous year. Even more notable is a separate study focusing on online game developers, which recorded a 100% adoption rate as of July.


The report provides a clear picture of how frequently these tools are utilized:

  • Daily usage: 63% of participants rely on generative AI tools every day.
  • Occasional usage: 22.8% of participants use these tools on an irregular basis.

While the study did not categorize the specific applications of AI—such as coding, asset creation, or narrative design—it noted that developers prioritize efficiency, cost reduction, and shorter development cycles. To maintain quality control, many studios have implemented strict human oversight, particularly ensuring that AI-generated materials do not compromise the final player experience.

The landscape in North America stands in stark contrast to these findings. Data from the GDC 2026 survey reveals a more cautious approach, with only 36% of developers stating that AI tools are part of their daily professional routine. Furthermore, the sentiment remains largely unfavorable, with 52% of respondents expressing concerns that generative AI is having a detrimental impact on the gaming industry.

The difference in adoption rates raises questions regarding cultural and social reception. While the Japanese gaming sector appears robust, the long-term impact of widespread AI usage remains a topic of debate.
