The Shift to Psychological Horror

While Deadlock may technically possess the core DNA of a MOBA or a third-person shooter, the latest update, City Never Sleeps, has fundamentally shifted the experience into something far more sinister. It has become, quite frankly, a blood-curdling horror game.

This realization stems from the high-stress encounters now prevalent in the game, particularly involving the newly introduced Rat King. Previously, the maze-like tunnels beneath the map served as a sanctuary for farming souls while playing characters like Rem, offering a quiet space away from the typical chaos of the lanes. However, the introduction of the Rat King has permanently altered that dynamic.

The Nightmare in the Tunnels

The terror of these confined spaces is palpable. As one player recounts:

«I'm skedaddling around the tunnels minding my own business when, in the corner of my eye I see something staring at me from the end of one of the adjacent tunnels. It's the Rat King, he's seen me, and he's running my way.»

Combat mechanics only exacerbate the fear; when engaged, the game restricts access to exits, trapping players in dark, confined corridors with their pursuer. Having been caught in these tunnels repeatedly, the experience of being hunted by the giant rat has turned routine exploration into a chilling ordeal.

Unpredictable Dangers in Chinatown

The horror is no longer confined to the underground. The new Chinatown district introduces open-world anxieties where enemies can materialize at any moment. Players often find themselves stalked by heavy-hitters like Abrams, only to be ambushed by others like Seven appearing out of thin air. The unpredictability of human opponents—who are almost always playing with ruthless aggression—creates an inherently frightening atmosphere that rivals dedicated survival horror titles.
