Physical Game Sales in Decline

Recent data from industry analyst and Circana advisor Mat Piscatella paints a challenging picture for the physical game market. According to his latest findings, only seven PlayStation titles have managed to move more than 100,000 physical copies in the United States so far this year. Furthermore, for the week ending July 11, 2026, just two titles surpassed 10,000 physical units sold across all publishers and platforms under the PlayStation umbrella.

Fan Backlash and Market Reality

These figures arrive at a time when the PlayStation community is actively campaigning against Sony’s strategy to cease the production of physical discs by January 2028. This frustration was recently highlighted in the comments section of the Marvel's Wolverine trailer, where thousands of users voiced their opposition to the company's shift toward an all-digital future.

Regarding the outcry, Piscatella remarked: «Commenting is cool, use your voice and all that. But commenting is cheap.»

Why Sony Remains Unmoved

While fans hope for a change in direction, industry experts suggest that the company is unlikely to reconsider. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, points out that the economic advantages of digital distribution far outweigh the potential impact of a user boycott. «They of course knew what the online reaction would look like, and they now wait for this storm to pass,» Dr. Toto noted.

According to the expert, even a hypothetical protest involving 500,000 subscribers would only affect a small fraction of the company's active user base. Ultimately, the decision comes down to the bottom line:

«Their current profit margin has been too weak for years now, so they feel like they must act. From an economic perspective, digital sales just make too much sense especially for platform holders.»

The Future of Physical Media

Although the specific list of titles reaching the 100,000-unit milestone remains unconfirmed, industry estimates from sources like Alinea Analytics suggest that major releases such as EA Sports FC 26 and Resident Evil Requiem account for a portion of these sales. For instance, physical editions for Requiem make up roughly 27.8% of its total 3.5 million unit sales, underscoring that while physical media still maintains a foothold, its market share is significantly dwarfed by the rapid growth of digital channels.
