Beta Testing and Enrollment
FakeFish, the development team known for Barotrauma, in partnership with publisher Shiro Unlimited, has announced that Frostrail will enter a closed beta phase starting August 31, 2026. This testing period will take place on PC via Steam and coincides with the platform's PvE Survival Crafting Fest.
Prospective players can currently register for the beta directly through the game’s official Steam store page. The upcoming test is expected to be more extensive than the previous playtest conducted in April, which occurred shortly after the game surpassed 300,000 wishlists. Notably, those who participated in the earlier session will be automatically considered for this round, eliminating the need for repeat registration.
Gameplay and Setting
Frostrail plunges players into a harsh, frozen post-apocalyptic landscape where humanity has been overtaken by a perpetual blizzard. The core of the experience revolves around a steam-powered locomotive, driven by the fictional 'Eden Engine,' which serves as both a primary mode of transport and a fortified base of operations.
Whether venturing solo or in a group of up to four players, users must navigate the treacherous environment to explore abandoned mining sites and ruins. The objective is to secure vital resources, including food, crafting materials, and weaponry, while surviving intense first-person combat encounters. The primary antagonists are the 'Revenants'—corrupted entities attracted to the noise of the train—and the unforgiving sub-zero temperatures that pose a constant threat to survival.
Strategic Depth and Development
Upon returning to the safety of the train, players must focus on maintenance and progression. As the developers noted:
«Back aboard, you spend what you gathered upgrading weapons and reinforcing the train before the next, harder stop.»
The Finnish studio, comprised of 30 developers, aims to replicate the high-stakes, collaborative atmosphere that defined their previous hit, Barotrauma. While Frostrail shifts from a 2D submarine setting to a first-person perspective aboard a train, the focus remains on cooperative tension and overcoming disaster.
Roadmap to Release
The closed beta serves as a key milestone leading up to the game's broader debut. Frostrail is scheduled to arrive in Steam Early Access during the fourth quarter of 2026. Upon launch, the title will feature localization for eight languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese. Official pricing details for the Early Access release remain undisclosed at this time.
