A New Milestone in Server Architecture

AMD has officially announced its 6th generation EPYC 9006 series, codenamed “Venice,” marking a significant breakthrough in server technology. As the industry's first x86 server CPU built on a 2nm-class process node, this lineup aims to solidify AMD's stronghold in the competitive AI data center infrastructure sector.


The flagship model, the EPYC 9996, boasts a massive configuration of 256 cores and 512 threads. By utilizing TSMC’s N2 process—the foundry's transition from FinFET to gate-all-around nanosheet transistors—AMD positions this series as a leader in high-performance computing, aiming for volume production on this advanced node.


Technical Prowess and Performance

The new Venice processors introduce several architectural leaps designed to handle modern, data-intensive workloads. Key specifications include:

  • Memory and Connectivity: Support for 16-channel DDR5-8000 memory or MRDIMM at 12,800 MT/s, delivering approximately 1.6 TB/s per socket.
  • Clock Speeds: The EPYC lineup pushes past the 5GHz barrier for the first time in the series' history.
  • I/O Standards: Integration of PCI-E 6.0 for enhanced bandwidth.

Dan McNamara, SVP & GM of Compute and Enterprise AI at AMD, emphasized the versatility of the new chips: “6th Gen AMD EPYC delivers workload-optimized compute for the full spectrum of modern data center needs; from running more agents and feeding GPUs across rack-scale AI infrastructure to powering the business-critical applications and services organizations rely on every day.”


Market Strategy and Future Outlook

AMD is positioning the Venice series to address the shift toward three-tier agentic data center architectures. By offering specialized variants, including the 9006X series—which features significantly larger L3 cache for high-performance computing—and the AI-optimized 9006 LP, the company is targeting every segment of the market.


This launch serves as a strategic counter-move against emerging competition, particularly Nvidia's Vera CPU. Despite the high-performance targets, the full rollout of the stack is expected to be staggered. While the core 256-core processor is slated for a Q4 2026 release, the complete product family is not expected to be fully available until 2027. Through these developments, AMD aims to maintain its momentum in the face of an increasingly aggressive competitive landscape.
