Strategic Shifts Under New Leadership
It has been only three months since Asha Sharma assumed the role of Xbox CEO following the retirement of Phil Spencer. During this brief yet transformative period, Sharma has implemented a series of major initiatives, including restructuring the Xbox Game Pass pricing model, enhancing the user experience, rebranding from “Microsoft Gaming” back to “Xbox,” and launching the “Xbox Player Voice” initiative.
As part of her goal to build a platform that is both “affordable, personal, and open,” Sharma is now expanding the executive ranks with several key appointments, as revealed in a recent internal memo.
Key Executive Appointments
The most notable addition is Matthew Ball, who will serve as Xbox’s Chief Strategy Officer. Sharma highlighted his extensive industry background, noting his reputation as a respected expert in gaming, media, and technology. According to Sharma, Ball has already been serving as a strategic advisor since early in her tenure.
“Matthew has been partnering with us on strategy since day 10 and will officially start this month, reporting to me,” Sharma stated.
Ball, widely recognized for his authoritative “The State of Video Gaming” reports, brings a wealth of experience from previous roles at Amazon Studios, McKinsey & Company, and Accenture.
Strengthening Technical and Business Operations
In addition to the strategy shift, Sharma has appointed Scott Van Vliet, formerly the Vice President of Azure OpenAI and AI infrastructure at Microsoft, as the new Chief Technology Officer. With over 20 years of experience in cloud and consumer platforms, Vliet expressed his excitement about merging his professional background with his lifelong passion for gaming.
Furthermore, Chris Schnakenberg has been named the Corporate Vice President of Partnerships and Business Development. Schnakenberg brings over a decade of experience from his tenure at Activision Blizzard, having joined the broader Microsoft organization in 2024.
Looking Ahead
Sharma emphasized that these leadership updates are designed to refine operational efficiency and ensure the company remains aligned with its long-term vision. These moves indicate a continued effort to position the Xbox brand for future growth, signaling that further organizational changes may follow as the company evolves under its new leadership structure.
