Apple has officially introduced its newest Mac mini lineup, offering users a choice between the brand-new M6 chip and the high-performance M5 Pro. While the Mac mini remains one of the most accessible and compact desktop solutions in Apple’s ecosystem, this iteration places a significant emphasis on internal processing speed and the optimization of local AI model execution.
AI Advancements and CPU Capabilities
Recognizing the growing demand for local AI tasks, Apple has significantly upgraded the base model. The M6-powered Mac mini reportedly delivers a 4x increase in AI performance, doubled storage and graphics speeds, and a 40% improvement in CPU efficiency. For professional users, the M5 Pro variant offers exceptional power, with Apple claiming up to 4x faster performance for Large Language Model (LLM) prompt processing in tools like LM Studio, and an 8.5x improvement over the M2 Pro.
Connectivity and Design Upgrades
Both new models continue to utilize the compact, redesigned form factor introduced in previous generations, including front-facing USB-C ports and a headphone jack. However, rear connectivity sees a significant leap forward:
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Both models now support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for faster wireless speeds and lower latency.
- Ethernet: Standard 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet is included, with optional upgrades to 10 Gigabit configurations.

The M6 model, starting at $899, features a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU with integrated Neural Accelerators. The M5 Pro, starting at $1,699, serves as a compact workstation with an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, supporting third-generation ray tracing and up to 64GB of unified memory.
