Apple has officially announced the latest generation of its compact desktop, the Mac mini. While the device retains the iconic, ultra-small aesthetic introduced with the M4 model, the internal hardware has received a significant overhaul. The most notable change is the debut of the M6 chip, Apple’s first-ever 2-nanometer processor.
The new Mac mini is designed to deliver a substantial performance leap. Apple claims the M6 provides up to 40% faster CPU speeds and quadruples the performance capabilities for AI-related tasks. Internally, the M6 is a 12-core powerhouse featuring:
- Two 'super' cores for maximum intensity
- Four performance cores
- Six efficiency cores
Additionally, the chip includes a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and support for the FP8 format to enhance 3D graphics and gaming. A new dual 16-core Neural Engine is also onboard to handle demanding AI workloads.
Pricing and Configuration Options
This boost in performance arrives with a price adjustment. The base model Mac mini with the M6 chip starts at $899 in the U.S. (an increase of $100 compared to the previous generation), offering 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. For users requiring more power, Apple also provides a version with the M5 Pro chip, which starts at $1,699. Both variants include the new N1 connectivity chip, enabling support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
Mac Studio: Power for Professionals
Apple has also refreshed the high-end Mac Studio, keeping its established design while significantly upgrading the internal architecture. The device is now available with either the M5 Max or the high-performance M5 Ultra chip.
The M5 Max offers an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU, providing a notable 30% increase in computational speed and 40% better graphics performance over the M4 Max. For those requiring the absolute peak of processing power, the M5 Ultra utilizes UltraFusion technology to effectively combine two M5 Max chips, resulting in a 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU.
Strategic Timing and AI Focus
The decision to refresh these lineups shortly before the anticipated autumn product announcements reflects Apple's push toward local, on-device AI processing. As Apple noted in its performance benchmarks, these machines are specifically tuned for professional and creative workflows, from image upscaling to running complex AI models locally.
«The new Macs are designed to meet the growing demand for local AI compute power, offering users more muscle for complex creative and professional tasks,» the company indicated.
Preorders for the updated machines are currently available, with shipments scheduled to begin on September 22. These units will arrive with macOS 27 pre-installed, featuring the latest iterations of Apple Intelligence capabilities.
