Distinctive Design Meets Portability

It has taken some time, but CMF—a sub-brand of Nothing—has finally entered the portable audio market. Sticking to its reputation for unconventional aesthetics, the brand has introduced two new models that stand out immediately due to their charming, vibrant, milk carton-inspired shape.

The lineup consists of the Speaker S ($59) and the Speaker M ($109). Both devices are available in bright orange, turquoise, and white finishes. A standout design feature is the customizable control knob, which allows users to swap cover plates and knobs between units. Beyond basic volume control, these knobs handle track navigation. Additionally, a built-in hole at the corner adds a practical touch, allowing for easy attachment to backpacks or outdoor gear.

Technical Specifications and Performance

Despite their playful appearance, these speakers are packed with surprisingly high-end features for their price point:

  • Speaker S: Features a 45mm full-range driver complemented by dual passive radiators to enhance bass output.
  • Speaker M: Double the size of the smaller model, this version houses a 10W tweeter, two drivers, and a 25W woofer for a more robust sound profile.

Both models boast modern connectivity features, including Bluetooth 6.0, NFC pairing, Google Fast Pair, and Microsoft Swift Pair. They are built for longevity and outdoor use, featuring an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and offering up to 18 hours of playback. While they utilize USB-C for charging, this port also functions as an audio input.

Advanced Pairing and Customization

A notable highlight at these price points is the ability to pair two identical units together for stereo sound, though users cannot mix an S model with an M model. Furthermore, the speakers support Auracast, a growing standard in wireless audio technology.

Reflecting the design philosophy seen in some Teenage Engineering collaborations, CMF plans to release official design files. This initiative will empower users to 3D print their own custom handles and accessories. Although the package does not include a USB-C cable, the audio quality provided by these units is remarkably rich for such compact devices.
