To combat these elusive threats, defense firm Ultra Maritime has demonstrated a sophisticated, two-pronged sonar approach during the U.S. Navy’s 2026 Lanternfish exercise.


The Power of Integrated Sonar

The solution leverages two established technologies: the Sea Spear passive sonar array and the AN/SSQ-125B active sonobuoy. While neither piece of hardware is new—passive and active sonar techniques date back to the early 20th century—the novelty lies in their integrated, distributed architecture.


By pairing these systems, the technology creates a more effective detection chain:

  • Passive Sonar (Sea Spear): Provides stealthy, long-range monitoring without revealing the operator's position.
  • Active Sonar (AN/SSQ-125B): Used selectively to pinpoint range and location once the passive system identifies a potential target.
