The gaming world is bracing for the return of its most legendary explorer. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, first unveiled at The Game Awards 2025, serves as a bold reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut. The upcoming title thrusts players back into the role of the adventurous archaeologist as she braves dangerous wilderness, battles lethal predators, and navigates complex puzzles in a high-stakes race to uncover the secrets of the sunken city.

Stepping Into an Icon's Shoes

At the center of this revival is actress Alix Wilton Regan, who provides both the voice and full performance capture for Lara. For Regan, taking on such a culturally significant character nearly 30 years after her inception is both a milestone achievement and a significant responsibility. During Summer Game Fest 2026, she shared insights into the rigorous audition process and the physical dedication required to inhabit the role.

«It was a very traditional casting process,» Regan explained, noting that the project was initially shrouded in secrecy. After navigating four rounds of auditions over eight months, she secured the role that she had once playfully hoped for years prior.

Physicality and Performance Capture

Regan emphasized that the character's physicality was the foundation of her performance. To prepare for the demands of full performance capture, she adopted a strict training regimen.

  • Rigorous Training: Regular weightlifting and boxing sessions were essential to feeling powerful enough to portray a character who handles physically demanding stunts and combat.
  • Outdoor Conditioning: Taking advantage of Los Angeles' hiking trails, Regan focused on building both the stamina and the grounded confidence required for the role.

«You need to feel your muscles so that when you have three men trying to pin you down in a scene, you can fight your way out of it,» she remarked. This physical strength directly informed the vocal delivery, with Regan opting for a lower, chest-heavy register to match Lara's authoritative and unyielding personality.

Redefining Lara for 2027

Regan describes this version of Lara as "unapologetic," highlighting the rarity of portraying a female lead who speaks with absolute certainty and zero hesitation. She believes that the reimagining honors the core of the original 1996 adventure while expanding the character's depth for a modern era.

Regarding the updated visual design, Regan expressed her approval of the team’s work: «This Lara is smoking hot. I have no notes to send back to the animation team or the design team apart from: Thank you for making me look so extraordinary. She has a really strong, gorgeous body. The body of a woman who is busy tomb raiding.»

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on February 12, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
